PHIL: Phil Wolfe
IRV: Irvin Lustig

IRV
Where do you see our field going?

PHIL
That's a tough one. I've seen our work in optimization become a solid, integral part of business planning, of industrial engineering. I can't imagine this ever going away. Sometimes we wonder why it hasn't become more widespread, why more people aren't using it.

IRV
What has held optimization from being more widespread?

PHIL
Optimization may have reached its natural limits of growth. It may already be handling most all the problems that are really worth handling with these particular tools.

I've rarely found an area where there was a tremendous gap that optimization could fill. Enough people nowadays know roughly the capabilities of optimization. There aren't a great deal of missed opportunities.
